What is a Community Health Worker (CHW)?

A community health worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of the community or has a good understanding of the community served. A CHW educates community members on health topics and community resources that may be available to them. They also serve as an advocate to help increase access to health care and improve cultural competency of services provided.

Health education specialists (health educators) teach people about behaviors that promote wellness. They develop and implement strategies to improve the health of individuals and communities.
